We’ll show you how to save money by timing your purchases to buy things during specific months.
You can’t time all purchases, as some things are emergencies, such as car or AC repairs. Other purchases, however, can be planned ahead. And when you do, you can pay a lot less. We’ll show you how this works by listing the best times of the year to buy specific items:
January
- Christmas stuff – Once the holidays are over, you can snag huge discounts on Christmas decorations, holiday cards, and even those ugly sweaters.
- Calendars – Don’t buy one before the new year. Get it in January, and you’ll pay less.
- Linens – If you need to buy them for your bed or other parts of your home, January’s the best month to do it.
- Gym memberships – Gyms fill up in January due to New Year’s resolutions and the fact that their memberships are often discounted to start the year.
- Home fitness equipment – Get it on sale in January to fulfill your resolutions without hitting the gym.
- Scales – To measure your fitness progress in the new year, you’ll need one. They tend to be the cheapest in the first month of the year.
- Televisions – As long as you don’t need the latest model, get your TV in January for the best deals after the Consumer Electronics Show.
February
- Jewelry – Buy it after Valentine’s Day to pay the least.
- Mattresses – Presidents Day weekend offers some of the best mattress deals of the year.
- Winter coats – Retailers use February sales to clear their inventory.
March
- Luggage – It goes on sale just in time for the warmer spring weather.
April
- Sneakers – As it warms up, people start heading outside, and sneaker prices go down.
May
- Air conditioners – Buy yours in May before the summer hits not only to be prepared for hotter temperatures, but also to pay less.
- Baby supplies – Memorial Day weekend is your best bet for high chairs, strollers, and more.
- Refrigerators and freezers – They go on sale in May, right before new models are revealed for the summer.
June
- Cookware – It goes on sale during peak wedding season.
- Outdoor supplies – Once summer hits, supplies like backpacks and tents get discounted.
- Vacation tickets – Traveling midweek in the early summer can lead to significant savings on airfare.
July
- Furniture – Get it on the Fourth of July weekend.
August
- Computers – You can get great deals on last year’s models during back-to-school sales, as long as they’re not Apple products.
- Grills – With summer ending, these tend to dip in price.
September
- Swimsuits – Temperatures are soon to drop, so snag your swimwear now when it’s at its lowest price.
- Thanksgiving flights – Buy a couple of months ahead in September to spend a lot less on tickets.
October
- Jeans – Get them once back-to-school sales are finished.
- Leaf blowers – You’ll need one for those fall leaves, and they tend to be cheap in October.
- Patio furniture – Get it in October on the cheap and store it over the winter.
November
- Small appliances – If they can fit on your kitchen counter, they’ll probably go on sale in November.
- Wedding gowns – Proposals go up during the holidays. Gowns go down in November.
December
- Swimming pools – A slower workload means better prices on pools from contractors looking to generate income.
- Toys – Grab some for upcoming birthdays once your holiday stash is complete, as they’re the cheapest in the 12th month of the year.
