Events

Come meet us.

The Housing Nonprofit staff, writers, and partners are out in the community to promote affordable housing. These events are a chance to learn more about various  programs that make home ownership accessible.  While we host several programs throughout the year, the work we do can only be accomplished in partnership with other organizations who share our values. Below are virtual and in-person events that provide real value to anyone taking steps towards home ownership.  We encourage our readers to learn from these programs and plug into the Housing Nonprofit community.

Using Publicly Owned Lands for Affordable Housing

This webinar provides guidance on how the public sector, including school boards and Community Redevelopment Agencies, can use its land for affordable housing purposes. Publicly owned land is one of the most important tools a local government must address the affordable housing crisis. Some local governments have enormous numbers of properties in their inventory available for affordable housing but are stymied in terms of taking the next steps towards disposition. Some local governments are inclined to avoid Florida’s surplus lands laws and sell surplus property to use the funds for general revenue. This training will provide best practices to local governments, nonprofits, and local advocates to improve the local process for disposing of publicly owned land for the benefit of affordable housing.

Overcoming Affordable Housing Crisis in South Florida

South Florida is experiencing a housing crisis at historic levels. The influx of new high-income residents moving into the market, coupled with a general housing shortage has caused South Florida to be the most cost burdened place in the U.S. Some point to housing affordability as the solution. Housing is considered “affordable” if it consumes less than 30% of a household’s total income. If housing affordability is so important, why aren’t we doing something to address the lack thereof?
